Cultural Connections in Puerto Rico!

The first group to inhabit the island of puerto rico was the Taino people. They had been there at least a thousand years before the Spanish arrived. The culture you see in Puerto Rico today is an aspect if Taino, Spanish, and African culture. This is because of the interactions the natives had with the Spanish during settlement.  The music on the island is rooted in Taino culture as well as the dances. Dances like the Bomba have a story behind it that are embedded deep in puerto rican history. This dance was created during the 17th century when slaves would do it to express they're frustrations at their situations.

Originally the Taino people were very spiritual and worshipped multiple Gods. However , after the arrival of ponce de leon in 1508, He brought with him , catholic faith. Today is the most predominant faith on the island. Today it is believed that about 75 to 85% of the population on the island is either catholic or has strong catholic ties.

I want to explain how the food on the island reflects the culture.  When researching some of the traditional foods there, I found that a lot of the food there is made with plantains. Some are fried and others are roasted or just included in a completely different dish. Researching this specific food, I found that it is originally from southeast Asia , Africa, and Egypt. So this leads me to believe that a large influence of the food that they eat on the island is apart of the African culture they inherited.

A Timeline of the History of Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico was first inhabited by a society of hunter-gatherers who discovered the island at least a thousand years before the Spanish  arrived. They were called the Taino culture. They lived in small villages led by chiefs. Eventually Christopher Columbus came and discovered islands in the Caribbean including Puerto Rico. Eventually that lead to the Columbian Exchange and the Transatlantic slave trade. After that, around 1865, local commissions reported that slavery should be abolished. Then we fast forward to the Spanish American war. This allowed the U.S. to take Puerto Rico and other islands away from Spain. This also prevented Puerto Rico from putting in their new government. The U.S. saw the island as a profitable area for tropical crops.
